The QDPI™ Learning Framework
A Structured, Standards-Aligned Model for Learning Teams
Developed by Family Learning Lab Co-School
Designed for Learning Teams
The QDPI™ (Question–Discover–Practice–Inform) Learning Framework is a structured instructional model developed by Family Learning Lab Co-School to guide Learning Teams — teachers, parents, and students — through a complete cycle of meaningful, standards-aligned learning.
QDPI™ was intentionally designed to bridge the gap between academic rigor and individualized instruction. It provides a clear, repeatable process that allows Learning Teams to master academic standards through activities aligned with each learner’s unique interests, learning styles, strengths, and learning differences.
Rather than separating structure from personalization, QDPI™ integrates both.
From Curiosity to Demonstrated Mastery
Traditional instruction often emphasizes content exposure. QDPI™ emphasizes the full learning cycle:
- Curiosity
- Concept development
- Skill application
- Demonstration of understanding
This structured yet simple progression ensures that learners move beyond surface-level engagement into measurable mastery.
Because the framework separates the learning objective from the activity format, standards can be mastered through multiple pathways. One student may build, another may write, another may demonstrate verbally — while all are meeting the same academic target.
The Four Phases of QDPI™
The QDPI™ cycle includes four intentional phases:
Q — Question
Learning begins with a compelling question, guiding prompt, or real-world challenge. This phase activates prior knowledge and establishes purpose. The Question phase allows Learning Teams to connect standards to student interest and relevance.
D — Discover
Learners explore new content through reading, observation, experimentation, modeling, discussion, or guided research. Discovery builds conceptual understanding and foundational knowledge.
Instruction during this phase may be adapted to meet diverse learning needs through visual, auditory, tactile, or experiential approaches.
P — Practice
Students apply what they are learning through hands-on tasks, structured exercises, creative construction, or problem-solving challenges. Practice allows for differentiation, scaffolding, and skill refinement.
Because activities can be tailored to student interest, learners remain engaged while still working toward the same measurable outcome.
I — Inform
Learners demonstrate and communicate their understanding. This may take the form of presentation, written explanation, demonstration, peer teaching, reflection, or project showcase. When a student can teach what they’ve learned, mastery is easily measured.
The Inform phase functions as built-in formative assessment, allowing teachers and parents to observe comprehension, skill transfer, and depth of understanding.
Structured Yet Personalized
A defining feature of QDPI™ is its ability to maintain instructional structure while allowing individualized learning pathways.
Within a QDPI™ lesson:
- The standard remains consistent
- The objective remains measurable
- The instructional phases remain structured
However:
- Activities may vary
- Materials may vary
- Output formats may vary
- Support levels may vary
This flexibility makes the framework well-suited for:
- Diverse learners
- Varied learning styles
- Students with learning differences
- Interest-driven learning environments
- Collaborative teacher–parent partnerships
Standards Alignment and Measurable Outcomes
QDPI™ is designed to support alignment with state and national academic standards. The framework guides learners through:
- Concept acquisition
- Skill development
- Application of knowledge
- Demonstration of mastery
The Inform phase provides observable evidence of learning, making student understanding visible and measurable.
Through this cycle, QDPI™ supports:
- Critical thinking
- Skill fluency
- Communication clarity
- Confidence in presentation
- Knowledge retention
- Real-world application
Implementation Across Learning Environments
QDPI™ is adaptable across:
- Supplemental education programs
- Enrichment settings
- STEM workshops
- Creative arts instruction
- Project-based learning
- Family-led learning environments
- Standards-aligned classroom settings
Its structured format allows consistent instructional delivery while remaining flexible enough to support differentiated instruction.
Built for Scalable Adoption
Each QDPI™ lesson may include:
- Clear learning objective
- Standards alignment
- Materials list
- Structured Q → D → P → I instructional sequence
- Defined student demonstration of mastery
This consistency supports educator clarity, parent partnership, and scalable implementation across programs or school settings.
A Collaborative Model
At its core, QDPI™ recognizes that meaningful education is strongest when teachers, parents, and students work together.
By equipping Learning Teams with a clear instructional framework, QDPI™ empowers families and educators to:
- Personalize learning without sacrificing rigor
- Maintain academic alignment while honoring individuality
- Create engaging, hands-on experiences tied to measurable outcomes
- Support diverse learners within a unified instructional structure
