Eclectic Learning For Non-Traditional Students

Find your fun - and your tribe!

About Family Learning Lab & Co-School

Family Learning Lab & Co-School is a non-profit homeschool resource center for families in the Greater Sacramento area.

Our drop in learning lab (coming soon) provides a shared space for you to homeschool your children – using our materials, or yours. Bring your own curriculum or have your students complete the posted activities in each Subject Room.

We also provide eclectic style camps & workshops that use multiple approaches to learning. These classes are great for kids who have trouble staying focused and motivated.

Can’t make it to the center? We also offer short and fun-focused online elective courses that are designed for kids who need something different from the traditional form of virtual learning. These classes include optional in person project days that double as paid workshops for non-enrolled students.

We are a proud member of the VELA Founder Network.

Homeschooling is hard enough.

Why do it alone?

Homeschooling doesn't have to only happen at home anymore. Let's get together to share resources and find community.

Let's Co-School.

DROP-OFF CLASSES

Eclectic Learning For Non-Traditional Students

We aim to break the molds of traditional in person teaching methods to engage kids who otherwise struggle in typical class structures. We use a variety of approaches to keep stress low and retention high.

Multi-Faceted Approach To Teaching

  • Hands-On Projects. Learning through projects is a big part of our teaching strategy. Projects allow kids to really explore a topic and do a deep dive into something that’s interesting to them. We use both individual and group projects to make our lessons more effective and fun.
  • Group Work. We encourage students to work together whenever possible so we can focus on exploration instead of performance measuring.
  • Gamified Quizzes & Tests. We don’t need to put students through stressful testing to find out if they learned something. We use fun interactive games like digital quiz boards, jeopardy, and more to make sure those facts stuck. (But don’t worry, your kids will come home with plenty of work samples that demonstrate their learning.)
  • Alternative Seating. If sitting at a table or desk isn’t your thing, hop on a comfy couch or papasan chair and chill while you learn. We also teach cyclically around the room to engage all students where they’re at.
  • Fidget Table. Some kids retain more when fidgeting or playing while listening. Students are welcome to grab something from our Fidget Table any time during class. Choose from boogie boards, clay, quiet fidget toys and more.
  • Snack Friendly. No hangry kids here! Our snack shack is stocked for kids to grab munchies during class and outside snacks and drinks are welcome. (We are a nut free center)

Classes For Unmotivated & Unfocused Kids

More and more kids these days have trouble focusing and staying motivated. This happens in our homeschool community too! Our classes are designed especially for kids who struggle with sticking with it. We also try to make all our classes no-homework classes so the learning is happening together in a no stress environment.

Our mission is to address every pain point to homeschooling.

We all have our strong reasons for homeschooling, but there are a lot of pain points that come with it. Our mission is to respond to the needs of our community wherever possible.

We've heard our families are desperate for more teen events - so that's a core component to our community programming.

You want kid formed clubs? You got it! Want your kids to be recognized for their achievements? We'll plan an awards night and make up the certificates!

Wherever you feel like there's something missing from your child's homeschool experience, we'll help you find that resource - or create it ourselves.

Family Learning Lab & Co-School exists to serve YOU!

ONLINE COURSES

Crazy Fun, Short Electives Classes

An online class with Family Learning Lab is designed to keep the interest of your child – not burn them out and destroy their passion!

We focus on the fun while teaching new electives so your child can decide to pursue the interests further.

Fun-Focused Trimester Classes

Our online elective courses are built on a trimester model. This allows kids to try out our classes without committing to an entire semester. It also keeps kids focused on the fun and interest so they can decide which areas they’d love to explore more when they’ve finished the class.

In Person Project Days

Each trimester class includes one in person project day where students are invited to meet and work together. These project days sometimes double as paid workshops for non-enrolled students. All materials are provided. These optional in person days are a great way for kids to socialize, work in teams, and get in person feedback on their work.

Classes Currently In Development:

  • Nature Writing & Poetry
  • Photo Quest: Intro to Photography
  • Cooking For Nutrition
  • Hydroponics Basics
  • Un-Ruly Grammar

Eclectic Approach

Our online courses piece together information from a variety of sources. We intentionally change types of sources and formats to give kids a variety that keeps things interesting.

In one lesson, your child may watch a short 5 minute YouTube video, then make a hands-on project, followed by an online gamified quiz. We break up material into bits and pieces so your child feels an immediate sense of accomplishment and success.
