Story Sculptors

A Picture Book & Clay Adventure for TK & Kindergarten

Step into a new story each week!

In Story Sculptors, children gather for an interactive picture book read aloud filled with imagination, discussion, and wonder. Then, using air dry clay, they bring the story to life by sculpting characters, creatures, objects, and scenes inspired by the book.

One week they may create tiny forest creatures after reading a woodland adventure. Another week they might sculpt rockets, dinosaurs, ocean animals, or magical storybook characters while discussing the story together as a group.

This class is designed to feel magical, calm, creative, and deeply engaging — a place where children can fall in love with stories while spending meaningful time learning alongside their parent or caregiver.

At Family Learning Lab, we believe some of the most powerful learning happens when children are emotionally connected to the experience. Story Sculptors combines wonderful books, conversation, creativity, and hands-on play to create a warm and memorable literacy experience that children look forward to each week.

Parents are encouraged to participate alongside their child, making this a shared learning adventure. The result is not only stronger literacy foundations, but also stronger family connection and confidence.

Designed With Purposeful Literacy Support

Story Sculptors is intentionally designed around foundational California TK and Kindergarten English Language Arts standards — especially in the areas of:

  • Speaking & Listening
  • Vocabulary Development
  • Story Comprehension
  • Retelling & Sequencing
  • Collaborative Conversation
  • Oral Language Development

During each class, children practice listening to a story, participating in guided discussions, answering questions, describing ideas, and expressing themselves verbally while working with clay.

Because children are actively engaged in creating, the pressure of “performing” is reduced. Conversations happen naturally and comfortably while children are focused on building and exploring.

This creates an especially supportive environment for:

  • shy learners
  • reluctant speakers
  • highly active learners
  • sensory learners
  • creative learners
  • English Language Learners (ELL/ESL)

A Wonderful Support for English Language Learners

Story Sculptors naturally supports children learning English as a second language because language is paired with visual storytelling, hands-on creation, repetition, and meaningful social interaction.

Instead of being asked to sit still and produce language on demand, children engage in conversation while:

  • building
  • observing
  • pointing
  • comparing
  • describing
  • retelling
  • asking questions

The clay creations themselves become communication tools.

Children can physically show their understanding even while verbal language skills are still developing.

Parents learning English alongside their child may also find the class approachable and supportive because the environment emphasizes connection, creativity, modeling, and conversation rather than pressure or perfection.

Progressive Skill Building Throughout the Year

Story Sculptors is intentionally designed to grow with children over time while maintaining a simple and predictable session rhythm.

The repeated class structure helps children feel safe, confident, and successful.

Throughout the year, children gradually build skills such as:

  • listening attentively
  • taking conversational turns
  • asking and answering questions
  • describing characters and events
  • sequencing stories
  • making predictions
  • expressing opinions
  • retelling stories
  • speaking in complete thoughts
  • building vocabulary

Because the routine stays familiar, children can focus their energy on communication, creativity, and comprehension.

Classes FAQ

Nope! We do not charge registration fees.

No. Students may join our classes any time. We have a variety of payment choices and you’re welcome to use whichever works best for your family. For example, you may use drop in passes or punch cards while waiting for charter vouchers.

We are a whole family center designed for all members of the family to learn, play, and enjoy the space together. Students who are not in a class have access to our sensory play area, lego wall, and art lab as well as learning materials to enjoy. We are offering a unique experience to our homeschooling community tailored to the whole family.

Either the All Class Bundle OR Kinder Hour gives you complimentary access to our center M-F 9am to 3pm to enjoy all our programming. Choose the option that is most appropriate for your students’ ages, but you do NOT need both.

We offer drop in passes for you to try any class. If you want to enjoy the class but not sure if you can commit to all sessions, feel free to buy a punch card to save money.

We welcome all children who can follow our code of conduct. Our primary guideline is that everyone gets to have fun. If your child is unable to allow all guests to enjoy their experience and allow them to participate equally, a different center may be more suited to your needs.

We feel that parents “just know” if a place is a good fit for their kids, so we’re happy to work with you to observe a class so you can really see if it’s a good fit. We also offer our drop in passes so you can try out classes for a day without a large commitment.

All classes have an age or grade range listed. For safety reasons, we do not allow children in a class area who are outside of this age range. This includes adults – you are welcome to bring your child to you at any time if they need support or assistance.

We understand that many families need to bring members of their support teams with them. Please note that only one adult is free per family, additional adults are $5 for the day. We have capacity limitations and may need to ask you to limit the number of adults you bring in on days we are reaching capacity.

If you have specific questions for your family please reach out!
