After checking in, each student will receive a small pumpkin.
Station #1: Using a variety of tools such as scales, measuring tape, rulers, and gauges, students will record their pumpkin’s attributes in their pumpkin journals.
Station #2: Students will examine prepared slides of cross sections of pumpkin parts under microscopes and magnifiers. Students record their observations in their pumpkin journals.
Station #3: Pumpkin seed estimation. Students will observe a large pumpkin and add their guess of how many seeds it has inside to a jumbo plot graph. At the end of the workshop, students will work in teams to count the pumpkin seeds and see who got the closest guess.
Station #4: Students may paint and decorate their pumpkins using a variety of art supplies and techniques.
Station #5: Early finishers may do an additional art project – painting acorns.
Cost for this workshop is $5 per participating student. No charge for siblings who are not receiving a pumpkin.
Recommended ages are 5 to 16, however all ages are welcome. Family Learning Lab events are always geared towards the whole family, and we attempt to adapt the activities to multiple ages so your whole family can participate. Kids younger than 5 are welcome to attend just for the pumpkin painting, or try any of the activities.
This is NOT a drop off event. Parent or guardian must remain with their children and supervise them at all times. All participants must sign a waiver when they arrive.
**Pumpkin journals will likely double as work samples for charter school student for science and/or math.
